Crystal Avarice by Troy D. Wymer starts with Coradelle Hershall's search for a missing planetary deed linked to her late father's estate, which includes a disputed property on the planet Staraliss. Coradelle hires Wilcox Brown, a private investigator, to investigate after discovering the deed may have been fraudulently altered or stolen. As Wilcox and his colleague Nancy Louray probe deeper into the mystery, they uncover the stink of corruption. Their investigation leads them to a conspiracy involving stolen alien crystals, mysterious deaths, and an elaborate cover-up. When Coradelle is abducted, Wilcox and Nancy are thrust into a race against time to rescue her and bring those responsible to justice. Worse still, all this intersects with a larger intergalactic conflict involving the Sharrixians, their military, and a potential war with humans.
Troy D. Wymer does a spectacular job in the fast-paced space opera
Crystal Avarice. The world-building is excellent, with a diversity of cultures and politicking. Wymer fleshes out a sophisticated social order of his own making, with power plays at the hands of the imposing Queen Empress Aminarra, who is worthy of a prequel in her own right. I love the subplot of a shady crystal trade, and the budding romance between Wilcox and Nancy gives readers a little more to chew on for emotional impact. Classic science fiction aficionados need not fear a lack of chase and action scenes; Wymer even blesses us with a shoot-out. The writing is sharp and Wymer weaves the three main story trajectories together into a tight finish that is neat, unrushed, and satisfying. Very highly recommended.

This book started off a bit slow, but once the story picked up, I was completely hooked. As a fan of both sci-fi and mystery, I found this book to be the perfect blend of the two. One of my favorite things was getting to see the story unfold from so many different perspectives. On top of that, the world-building was phenomenal—so immersive and richly detailed that I felt like I was right there alongside the characters. It even made me wish I lived in a world like the one described. The plot twist at the end with who was actually behind everything caught me off guard, which made it even more intriguing. I could easily see this book being adapted into a movie or a limited series. If you love space operas and are looking for a short, action-packed read that you won’t be able to put down, this is definitely one to check out.

Crystal Avarice by Troy D. Wymer doesn't fit neatly into only one category. Sci-fi, mystery, romance, suspense. You can't pick just one to define it. Will Wilcox Brown realize Nancy's feelings for him? Will Coradelle ever find the deed to Staraliss? Will she even survive? Who killed the Sharrixian gatherers? It is masterfully woven together to tell a deeply engrossing story that will have you on the edge of your seat. The characters are written with such depth and dimension that you can picture them perfectly down to the clothing they wear. The locations are interesting and wonderfully detailed so that the reader becomes one with the surrounding story. You wont be able to put this one down once you've started. I wish I could have given it more than 5 stars. You wont be disappointed.
